theme 9 week 1: LOW KEY

The past 4 weeks we explored high key photography; the next 4 will be about low key photography. Low key images are composed of large areas that are dark in tone, with a lot of contrast between the dark and light tones. Low key images can be dramatic and moody. I made this image on a bright, sunny summer day, with the cheery blue and yellow raft bobbing in the blue water. I converted the image to black and white and then digitally darkened much of the image dramatically. The areas of the water that were intensely lit with sunlight sparkling on the waves stand out in contrast to the darkened areas. In reality it was an upbeat, typical sunny cottage summer day; the low key treatment makes it appear ominous and foreboding. Please click here to see Simone's image.
