theme 4 week 2: SELECTIVE FOCUS

This image is a bit of a Mind F... At first glance, it appears to be a composite of two separate out of focus photographs. However it is actually a single image, made with a shallow depth of field and selective focus. Other than a digital conversion to black and white and minor exposure adjustments, nothing else was done to it. There was a reflection of two adjacent, perpendicular wings of a building visible in the window of a building across from it. Working with the reflection, I positionned myself so that the window frame was central, and then divided the two reflected building wings on either side of the frame when I looked through the viewfinder. I focussed just on the window frame, with the lens aperture wide open. That made the reflections appear very out of focus, since they were quite far behind me. If I had used full depth of field, with everything in focus, the image would have been much more straightforward and, to me, less interesting. To see Simone's image, please click here.
